Brandel's review of Randon Billings Noble's essay collection, Be With Me Always was published in Issue 50 (Spring/Summer 2020) of Salamander.
Brandel's review of Jennifer Militello's essay collection, Knock Wood, appeared in River Teeth, A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative in December 2019.
Brandel's review of Carley Moore's essay collection 16 Pills was published in Vol. 39, Issue 1 of Pleiades, Winter 2019.
Brandel's essay "Transutopia" was nominated for a 2015 Pushcart Prize by Fourth Genre.
Brandel was awarded the 2014 Goldfarb Family Fellowship for Nonfiction Writers, a fully-funded two week fellowship given annually to the top creative nonfiction applicant to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
Brandel's manuscript, Mother, Loose, won the Accents Publishing 2014 chapbook contest.
Brandel's essay, "A Tale of Two Rivers," won the Salem College Center for Women Writers' International Literary Award in nonfiction in 2014 (Penelope Niven award). Judge Samuel Autman wrote: "The voice is tight, the narrator knows when to step in with the personal and when to allow the research to carry the piece. The fragmented structure makes the piece feel experimental, contemporary and traditional simultaneously. This is astonishing in its ambition and scope."
Upcoming Events
Brandel is offering a series of “social meditation” drop-in sessions through the Compassion Education Alliance: first Tuesdays of the month (February, March and April 2022) from Noon to 1:00 pm Eastern Time (ET). These one-hour sessions carry a suggested donation of $10 to benefit the nonprofit Compassion Education Alliance.
